  Task: Applying coats of plaster or stucco  
 Hazard: Overhead work

  Problem:

Applying coats of plaster or stucco often requires a worker to work with the hands at or above shoulder height, and the worker must also hoist heavy scaffolding materials overhead.

  • Overhead work can cause musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) such as tendonitis of the shoulder, and lifting can cause MSDs of the back and shoulders.
  • The worker may also experience neck pain or injury, because the neck is frequently in an extreme position during overhead work to allow the worker to see what s/he is doing.
  • MSDs are the most common injuries in the construction industry, accounting for over one-third of all lost workday injuries and about half of all compensation claims. 
 
  Risk Description:

Applying coats of plaster or stucco can lead to shoulder tendonitis and non-specific shoulder pain.  Tendonitis occurs when the tendon becomes inflamed.  Tension neck syndrome (myofascial pain syndrome) is characterized by pain in the shoulder-neck region along with tenderness over the shoulder-neck muscles.  It is one of the most common work-related MSDs of the neck and shoulder. 

 
  Level of Risk:

Work loads or activities are of such a magnitude and character that a significant number of workers risk developing an MSD in the short or long term.

 
  Assessment Info:
