Construction Solutions work hazards, and options for making work safer

Hazard Analysis

  Work Activity: Pipes & Vessels
Task: Disassemble and remove damaged or worn pipe
 Hazard: Kneeling & Squatting

  Problem:

Disassembling and removing damaged or worn pipe may involve kneeling and squatting which can put excessive pressure on the knee joint.

  Risk Description:

Working in kneeling or squatting posture while disassembling and removing damaged or worn pipe can increase forces in the knee. The cumulative effects of kneeling or squatting may lead to knee injuries such as bursitis or osteoarthritis.

  Level of Risk:

Work loads or activities are of such a magnitude and character that a significant number of workers risk developing an MSD in the short or long term.

  Assessment Info:

To assess exposure to kneeling and squatting postures, determine how many hours per day the worker spends with their knee(s) bent deeply >120°.  Also, visit Thomas Bernard's website for a host of practical ergonomic tools.
