Construction Solutions work hazards, and options for making work safer

Hazard Analysis

Work Activity: Sheet Metal & HVAC
Task: Clean, remove and repair existing ductwork/HVAC
 Hazard: Vibration

  Problem:
Cleaning, removing and repairing existing ductwork/HVAC is often performed with power tools.  Workers are exposed to hand-arm vibration when using power tools.  Repetitive exposure to vibrating tools can lead to hand-arm vibration syndrome or carpal tunnel syndrome.

  Risk Description:

Repetitive use of power tools when cleaning, removing and repairing existing ductwork/HVAC exposes workers to hand-arm vibration, and is a risk factor for hand-arm vibration syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome.

  Level of Risk:

Work loads or activities are of such a magnitude and character that all or most workers risk developing an MSD in the short or long term.

  Assessment Info:

To assess exposure to vibration, determine the associated magnitude of acceleration (m/s2) and the primary frequency (Hz) of the vibration.  Also, visit Thomas Bernard's website for a host of practical ergonomic tools.
