Wheelbarrow Crossbar

A wheelbarrow crossbar is a bar that attaches 8-10 inches from the end of the handles on both sides of the wheelbarrow enabling additional leverage.

Description:

The wheelbarrow crossbar attaches to most standard wheelbarrows. The crossbar may make it easier to push heavy loads in wheelbarrows up inclines.

The wheelbarrow crossbar attaches eight to ten inches from the end of the handles on both sides of the wheelbarrow. The benefit of this bar is that it allows operators to use their legs to give additional leverage when transporting material up inclines. Wheelbarrows are routinely over-loaded making it difficult to transport and dump heavy loads. The user has the option of pushing against the middle bar with their thighs, increasing the amount of force applied to the wheelbarrow. When the user wants to dump the load, they can use a knee to help lift up the back of the wheelbarrow reducing the amount of weight that is lifted using arm and shoulder strength.

Risks Addressed:

The wheelbarrow crossbar can help reduce heavy manual material handling and stressful hand & wrist activity.

How Risks are Reduced:

The use of the wheelbarrow crossbar gives the user additional leverage so that some of the lifting associated with using a wheelbarrow can be performed using the lower body, instead of just the trunk and arms.

Shoulder and elbow injuries may be reduced by using the wheelbarrow crossbar. The crossbar can decrease the amount of stress that it requires to dump a heavy load within the shoulder and elbow joints.

Effects on Productivity:

Based on the ability to transport and dump heavy loads, the wheelbarrow crossbar may have a positive effect on productivity.

Additional Considerations:

Wheelbarrows are designed to hold a certain amount of weight, and it is not recommended that a worker exceed the manufactures recommendations on payload.
